UnixShell part II

I was talking to my brother and he said:

Unless you chose the “unstable” branch, Debian is fairly outdated so you’re starting off with some really old versions of things. I get the feeling Debian is managed by people running really big important servers who are scared shitless to change anything.

So – I nuked the OS and installed Ubuntu’s Breezy server. I ran into problems following the debian instructions from yesterday’s post (mostly because the package servers have differences). So I was searching around and found XAMPP which absolutely kicks ass.

XAMPP installs Apache, MySQL, PHP & PEAR, Perl, ProFTPD, phpMyAdmin, OpenSSL, GD, Freetype2, libjpeg, libpng, gdbm, zlib, expat, Sablotron, libxml, Ming, Webalizer, pdf class, ncurses, mod_perl, FreeTDS, gettext, mcrypt, mhash, eAccelerator, SQLite and IMAP C-Client.

And it installs this in, oh, under a minute! Gritty details on how to do this are documented on the second brain.

So – from scratch to working wordpress blog on UnixShell is now down to under 10 minutes.

Love to see you do that on Microsoft (to speak nothing of the cost)

Thanks for the link to XAMPP! That looks like it freakin rocks. I’ve got to check that out because I’d like to rebuild ubuntu on my laptop and only install what I need. When I first did it, I just started installing everything and now I feel like I’m sitting at my desk at work with all the paper everywhere.
