Rant: How to be more effecient

I’m really, really ,really sick of all the blog pieces, new articles, tv spots, etc. on how to be more efficient at work. Americans are either top or close to the top of average hours per week in the industrialized world (wikipedia). Do we really need to make that time more efficient?

There is all kinds of stupid advice out there to help you be more efficient. Most of them amusingly concentrate on de-emphasizing communications: cut down on email, IM, phone, etc. Or, worse, education: stop reading blogs, news, etc.

You know what experts… just because computers, under optimal conditions, can help us do ten times more work than our parents doesn’t mean that’s something to shoot for. It’s not healthy (as is beyond obvious in virtually every health study done since 40’s). It’s important and healthy to do something social and educational with your life.

So – the next time your looser boss sends you some tip on efficiency… quit. And stop voting this crap up on Reddit, Digg, etc. It’s retarded. When the inevitable thousands of tips come out (given ridiculous New Years resolutions) just ignore them, or, better, let them know they suck.

Don’t try to figure out how to fit more meaningless busy work into your life, figure out how to fit less of it in… cut down, don’t optimize. Work 30 hours (or less!) a week next year, full of IM, blogs, news and any other distractions you like. Say “fuck you” to 60 hour work weeks and corporate “culture” and a huge “fuck you” to major media who, in a world full horrors, feels it necessary to waste time telling you how to waste less time and work more so you can buy more from their advertisers.

Reminds me of Thoreau’s “Economy” essay in Walden, probably my all-time favorite piece of writing. It gets into this point…

“I sometimes wonder that we can be so frivolous, I may almost say, as to attend to the gross but somewhat foreign form of servitude called Negro Slavery, there are so many keen and subtle masters that enslave both North and South. It is hard to have a Southern overseer; it is worse to have a Northern one; but worst of all when you are the slave-driver of yourself.”
